Instituational Logos

Research on Institutional Logos

The institutional logo is the first thing we see before a film begins. The better the institutional logo the more the audience are likely to stay and watch the film. If the institutional logo is good and of high quality then the audience gets pre conceptions that the film is going to also be of high quality.  Researching different institutional logos will help us come up with out finalised institutional logo and help us understand the importance of them.

The theme of the Universal institutional logo is space. It shows the world with Universal in 3D written across it. This gives the audience a feeling before the film that they are going to be taken on an 'outer world experience' and on a new adventure. The logo uses animation and bright bold writing, this makes it stand out but also makes it look professional and therefore we get a preconception of the quality of the film.

The theme of the MGM logo is a lion. The use of a lion connotes power and danger and this gives an insight into the films that they produce. The use of Gold connotes wealth and therefore gives the pre-conception that the film is going to be of high quality as we perceive MGM to be wealthy due to the gold.  The film strips on the bottom of the institutional logo connotes that MGM is prestigious and the use of film strips that were used with old cameras shows the mass audience that MGM has been established for a long time.

Warner Bros themes is the used of the sky with a shield in.  The use of a golden shield connotes power and wealth. It suggests to the mass audience that the institution is wealthy and of high status. giving preconceptions that the film is going to be of high quality and therefore making people want to see the film. The Warner Bros Entertainment logo is constructed to show a shield this connotes that they have authority within the industry and this connotes to the mass audience that their films may be better than the other films from other institutions. Also clouds are used which connotes dreams and how the film may transport them to another world.

The theme of the Paramount is the top of a mountain. The mountain could signify that Paramount Pictures are at the top of the industry and that they have reached their goal by producing high quality films. Upon seeing this institutional logo the audience may want to watch the film more as they are expecting high quality due to the logo. The stars could connote the institutions achievements and stars usually represent this. The clouds could also connotes a dreamlike journey you are about to undertake whilst watching the film and how the institution has created a journey for the audience.

The theme of the DreamWorks is a child sitting on a moon fishing into the clouds.  Yet again the clouds signify dreams and calmness, making the audience feel the film is going to take them on an adventure. The use of the moon connotes that they are better than the other institutions as they are above the rest.  The child sitting on the moon may imply that the institution aims their films at a younger audience.

The theme of the Columbia institutional logo is the Statue of Liberty this could show that Columbia are situated and are very popular in USA. As noted above the clouds connote a dreamlike setting which implies that the film will take the audience on a dreamlike  adventure. The use of the statue of Liberty shows the institutions god like status, power and wealth which will make people want to watch their films as they believe it will be of high quality.  The light being held by the statue of Liberty shines on the title drawing attention to it showing its importance.
The 20th Century Fox Logo is a statue of the companies name with search lights around. The fact that the 20th century fox logo is centre and a statue shows the company's power and wealth which therefore implies the success of the company and that it is worthy of being idolized.  The low angle shot of the Logo adds effect as it shows the company's status and their importance within the industry. The use of search/strobe lights suggests they are linked in with celebrities and people of importance as they are usually associated with events and landmarks or importance such as the Hollywood sign.

Researching Institutional Logos will help us when we create our own logo. We can take aspects of different logos I have researched to create a logo that has a positive effect on the logo. We could include gold and clouds which seem to be a popular option within the institutional logo to entice the audience into watching our film. The institutional logo is the first thing the audience see's before watching a film and this gives a pre-conceptions of the film they are about the watch.
